Kamalasha
Jonas Mutale, "Kamalasha", 2025, Acrylic on canvas, 17.7 x 12 in. (45 x 30.5cm)
Framed in wood.
(Jonas, 25, has been committed to art since he was a teenager and has received mentorship from some of Zambia's older, more established artists. This mentorship is discernible in his harmonious use of vibrant colours to make sumptuous and enthralling slice-of-life scenes that are filled with overwhelming humanity and capture ever-shifting moments in time. Jonas's paintings are rich visual records that offer an understanding of ongoing lived experiences in a bustling country with an exceptionally young population; a country contemporaneously stagnant and hurtling into vast unknowns, where, in it's capital, it is not uncommon to see hawkers peddling coal for households to produce energy, and the occasional McLaren or Maybach. Kamalasha, the title of this piece, roughly translates to 'coal pushers'. His art career is young but off to an exceptional and exciting start, with many of his paintings selling in Europe and America.)
