NCWALA ON ITS PEAK
Alex Suse Chishimba, "NCWALA ON ITS PEAK", 2026, Oil on canvas, 21.6 x 35.4in. (55 x 90cm)
Alex, 29, paints in a style that is a refreshing evolution from the works produced by the masters of Zambia's art scene in the 1970s and '80s. In fact, Alex still receives mentorship from one of the legends of this era; but his work goes further in its thematic exploration and is appropriately suited for modern tastes.

From the artist:
This painting depicts The Ncwala traditional ceremony, celebrated by the Ngoni people of Eastern Province in Zambia, reaching its peak during the last weekend of February every year. This peak, centered at the Mtenguleni Main Arena in Chipata District, is a massive celebration attended by hundreds of thousands of people, including high-ranking government officials and international tourists.
The peak of the Ncwala ceremony is characterized by several key elements, such as the paramount Chief Mpezeni conducting the Mulumo (tasting the first fruits) and the Mnikelo (slaughtering a black bull), thus communicating with ancestors.
