Insaka
Alex Suse Chishimba, "Insaka", 2026, Oil on canvas, 31.4 x 35.4in. (80 x 90cm)
Alex, 29, paints in a style that is a refreshing evolution from the works produced by the masters of Zambia's art scene in the 1970s and '80s. In fact, Alex still receives mentorship from one of the legends of this era; but his work goes further in its thematic exploration and is appropriately suited for modern tastes.

From the artist:
This piece serves as a visual bridge between Zambia's rich cultural heritage and its technological future, capturing a moment of communal gathering that is central to the Bemba people of northern part of Zambia.
The term "insaka" translates to "assembly." In traditional Zambian village life, the insaka is not merely a structure but the heartbeat of the community. The painting illustrates this by placing the insaka at the very center of the village.
