Alex Suse Chishimba"STREETKIDISM", 2026, Oil on canvas, 25.19 x 35.4in. (64 x 90cm)

Alex, 29, paints in a style that is a refreshing evolution from the works produced by the masters of Zambia's art scene in the 1970s and '80s. In fact, Alex still receives mentorship from one of the legends of this era; but his work goes further in its thematic exploration and is appropriately suited for modern tastes.

From the artist:

This piece serves as advocacy to highlight the 'STREETKIDISM' crisis, specifically how street children have turned these urban structures into sleeping quarters and navigate their daily lives using violence as a survival tool.

Street children, a growing urban phenomenon driven by poverty, neglect, and family conflict, represent a vulnerable population struggling for survival, often developing specialized behaviors for resilience in hostile environments. Social psychology studies their marginalization, social stigma, risk-taking behaviors (e.g., substance use), and adaptation mechanisms to 'enemy territory,' often including the formation of informal street families or gangs for protection.
