Alex Suse Chishimba"Ubulondo", 2025, Oil on canvas, 20.8 x 16.9in. (53 x 43cm)

Alex, 29, is a refreshing evolution from the works produced by the masters of Zambia's art scene in the 1970s and '80s. In fact, Alex still receives mentorship from one of the legends of this era; but his work goes further and is appropriately suited for modern tastes.

From the artist:

The painting "Ubulondo" highlights a critical environmental crisis in Zambia, where modern technology is rapidly depleting fish stocks. Below is an expanded look at the traditional practices, the specific threats mentioned, and the conservation measures currently in place.

Traditional Knowledge: Ubulondo and Umono

Language & Title: "Ubulondo" is a Bemba word that roughly translates to "the art or act of fishing".

The Umono (Fishing Basket): This is a traditional trap made from woven reeds or grass. It is designed to be placed in shallow waters, floodplains, or swamps, allowing water to flow through while trapping mature fish.
